Golem tapes

We want to bring your attention to a new Danish tape-label run by Mikkel RL of free music collective Shiggajon, focusing on the many and very productive danish underground music scenes; Golem Tapes.

The first batch was released this friday and features four Danish "rock"-like projects that are all recommended. Go to www.golemtapes.blogspot.com for artwork and samples:

g01 . mazurka . fruits (2nd press) . 24 copies
Repress on black tapes with second sorting of covers. Free, aggressive psychedelic klezmer for clarinet and drums.

g02 . sol . black cloud of becoming . 50 copies
Three diverse though consistent sides of Emil Brahe's "doom-metal"-project.

g03 . hahn kult . across ashen faces and leaden gazes . 50 copies
First release by hk for many years and a clear contrast to their early "psychedelic" black metal/noise-releases. Repetitive wall of sound, variations on a theme.

g04 . mythic sunship . colour out of space . 50 copies
Unpretentious spacerock, a debut release. Flat dynamics and a repetitive, hypnotic flow.

4,5€ each, all four: 15€

Ark Tarp pt. III

The end of the pcib-blog is on the horizon, but here is probably the last update, concerning the tree new and last ever releases on Ark Tarp. Go to http://www.arktarp.blogspot.com/ for more images and sound. They are:

Tarhumans / Mette Mareridt
"Helmet To Hear Oneself Break / Cookies Of Zen, Fortune Of Light"
ARK010 / CD-R / Ltd. to 50 copies

Collage drone debutants Tarhumans and free form insanity unit Mette Mareridt build a rough and narrow maze of brain-drilling cymbal bowing, akward percussives and hazey, violet and heavily sticky no wave walls. These recordings are a fiery collision between two of Copenhagen's most schizophrenic and abstract outfits where everything is constantly changing and constantly open.

• Comes in a hand painted cardboard case with paste-on art including seven hand cut, pro-printed photo inlays and a text inlay printed on recycled paper.

--------------------------------------------

Pummeler / The North Sea
"Pachacuti / In Your Teeth"
ARK009 / CD-R / Ltd. to 50 copies

Another document from two well known silhouettes in new electronic music. Pummeler and The North Sea present an extreme adventure of violent FX explosions detailedly reflecting nature's rite of anger, eroding forests and heavy rain causing the soil to vanish from the flood. A complete degeneration followed by deep afterglows of slow-growing sound cycles and dysthopic synthesizers oozing, flowing and drowning.

• Comes in a hand painted cardboard case with paste-on art including seven hand cut, pro-printed photo inlays and a text inlay printed on recycled paper.

--------------------------------------------

Dead Black Arms / Fire Serpent
"Last Primary Experience / Premature Enlightenment"
ARK008 / CD-R / Ltd. to 50 copies

Two of Copenhagen's finest noise and drone constructors, Dead Black Arms aka Claus Haxholm and Fire Serpent aka Bjørn Puggaard, entwine and submerge into a colorful cauldron where wamth and solace meet frost and distress. This split is a breathtaking stream of minimal, psychedelic sinus drone compositions floating slowly in thin air amongst the deep ravines of a barren earth.

• Comes in a hand painted cardboard case with paste-on art including seven hand cut, pro-printed photo inlays and a text inlay printed on recycled paper.

Consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds - bsbta . part four

So, after a long delay here is part 3 of the bsbta-documentation. In case you have forgotten what this is about, check parts one, two, and three.

It seems the strength of bsbta is their compilations, reaching some pretty obscure niches of Danish diy music. Thus, this will be the focus of this post, along with a few non-compilation classics.

First the compilations in chronological order:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Va . hairballs of hysteria . BSBTA 2001 . cd-r . download
Early compilation of oddities

Va . musical chain letters . BSBTA 2002 . cd-r . download
Bsbta "we're talking about 9 pieces of music here, each which are comprised of audio input from 4, 5 or 6 different artists. One artist would start a piece, and then send it along to the next artist, etc."

Va . affiliate program vol. 1 . BSBTA 2004 . cd-r . download
Later compilation of oddities

Va . affiliate program vol. 2 . BSBTA 2004 . cd-r . download
more oddities

Va . affiliate program vol. 3 . BSBTA 2005 . cd-r . download
Late compilation of oddities

And the non-compilations, also in chronological order:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Brumdrøn . hjernefar kommer til fadet . BSBTA 2001 . cd-r . download
Bsbta put it pretty well: "upbeat instrumental gems with Commodore 64-ish synth melodies and complex prog-metal / Zappa-esque tendencies," - with a pseudo-retarded feel to it

Los flying fallaflers . is there anything we forget to sound? . BSBTA 2002 . cd-r . download
Weird vocal sounds and abstract conversations in 1995

Mach II . soundsystem . BSBTA 2002 . cd-r . download
Lenny Kravitz' first EP on bsbta

The president's heart . Goodwill is everywhere and the lighthearted song of the gondoliers is heard in the distance . BSBTA 2003 . cd-r . download

Frail stars . postcards from the plastic planet crashed spaceship pilot, pt. 1 . BSBTA 2003 . cd-r . download
Guitar-drums-bass alternative rock music

Frail stars . sequel (polaroids) . BSBTA 2005 . 2 cd-r . download
Bsbta: "electrified explosions and/or honey-drenched sonic explorations from this Copenhagen-based solo project."

The silver quickies . phlegmboyant . BSBTA 2005 . 2 cd-r . download
Bsbta: ""Phlegmboyant" explains what it's like getting older, being stuck in a dead end office job, all while remembering late 80s/early 90s sitcoms a little too clearly. All that, amidst Beefheart-esque con-fusion and cLOUDDEAD-esque... fusion jazz(?!)..." - deconstructed

Low fire . the second shortcoming . BSBTA 2007 . 2 cd-r . download
Short pieces of old school low-fi-diy-folk circling around teenage themes.

Body lotion and the bloody hands . screamfest . BSBTA 2008 . 2 cd-r . download
Horror-pop?

Posh isolation pt. I

Posh isolation could be the only interesting Danish noise-label these days, and a quite successful and very productive one, focusing primarily on harsh power electronics, raw (both old and hipster-)black metal and anything in between since 2009. Ark Tarp pt. II

Ark Tarp recently made another sold-out release from batch #1 available for download:

Bjørn Puggaard . Peace, Love & Pharmacy . Ark Tarp . 2009 . cd-r box ltd. 50 . download
Circuit-bends!. Ark Tarp wrote: The bear has awoken from its lair. After several years of circuit bending kids’ toys into monstrous clusterfuck machines of mass destruction, Bjørn Puggaard delivers a lurid, metamorphic debut album, as if seeing the world through a kaleidoscope. With a density rarely heard of, this lone sound alchemist pulls in deserted planets and turns them into water and weird healing stones. A fourty one minute rumble of magnetic-brainsplat-drone-fuck, you can’t escape from.

Mere uddybende om de enkelte bands:

U.S. GIRLS

Like fellow DIY ingenues Sally Strobelight and Inca Ore, U.S. Girls’ approach is deceptively ethereal and delightfully haunting; lithe, lysergic gamma rays of keyboard murk beamed over percussive bonk sort of resemble Diamanda Galás reinterpreting Suicide’s Red Star. And dig that cover of Bruce Springsteen’s “Prove It All Night,” done in such an effortless, barbital lush you’d swear the air was filled with mescaline.

Ignatz

George Herriman created Ignatz in 1910. It was a vicious mouse in the comic Krazy Kat. Ignatz' favourite occupation was throwing bricks at Krazy Kats head, who thought it was a love declaration from the mouse. The Brussels based artist Bram Devens uses Ignatz as his alter-ego for his own pile of bricks. Acoustic songs wrapped with effects and driven by improvisation and spontaneousness.

Sheldon Siegel

There are young, arrogant artists who think they will conquer the world from their studios in Belgium with their neo-realistic paintings and their hipster indie rock bands and matching uniforms. There are also other kinds of artists who translate the contemporary nihilistic climate to sharp pastiche and absurdist drawings. In that scene old patron saints are violated shamelessly by means of free improv. Gino Coomans (cello, music box), Erik Heestermans (drums, percussion) and Gerard Herman (sax, vocals, tapes) got together in the suburbs of Antwerp. With a shared love for free jazz and an aversion for taboos the trio explores the possibilities of combined action. They avoid the easy trap of maximum instrument volumes, and instead they reticently seek for a universe in which each musician can take their part at any point, or leave it to another. It is because of that particular attitude that Sheldon Siegel comes to amazingly honest instant compositions. Probably one of the most adventurous Belgian improv groups of the new decennium.

Old news

For those of you who havent noticed, the new SOL/blodtru-split old europa death chants is out as cd on Paradigms recordings. Heavy, ambitious, and well-produced (Danish) non-sunnish drone-metal with character. Paradigms puts it pretty well:

Finding a home somwhere between the claustrophobic mirk of Skepticism, the bleakness of Khanate, the driving rhythms of Godflesh and a heart of European neo-folk, this is one glorious, bleak and rewarding proposition

Mythic sunship

At this years' festival of endless gratitude, I picked up this promising demo by the Danish trio Mythic Sunship

Mythic sunship . untitled . self-released . 2010 . cd-r ltd. 40 . download
Somewhat minimal, repetitive heavy-psych

Ark Tarp part I

Danish label Ark Tarp recently made three sold out releases available for download - here they are.

Shiggajon . Shiggajon . Ark Tarp . 2010 . cd-r ltd. 60 . download
First release as the "expanded" shiggajon presenting some somewhat march-band-like, percussive doomfolk sounds. Ark Tarp wrote: Danish improv collective Shiggajon rises more bright and clear than ever and reveals the first deep red sunbeams of a new beginning with a blast of euphoric ethnopsych and hypnotic fields of drone music. This album lets you feel the strength of the wind and the magnetism of the roaring waves in the wide lonesome ocean. All you have to do is fall in.

Julie Bo . Collected songs 2007-2009 . Ark Tarp . 2009 . tape ltd. 50 . download
First release by pseudo-traditional folk singer-songwriter JB. Ark Tarp wrote: Copenhagen’s best kept new-folk secret. The quirky debut album of Julie Bo carries you back to medieval times and traditions, through the seventies’ free spirits and todays meadows, on to a peaceful future where you’ll want to grow old. A hissing wind grazing the feathers of a chirping bird, passing on echoes through the thick, tortuous canopy.

Mette Mareridt . parkliv . Ark Tarp . 2009 . cd-r box ltd. 50 . download
Almost-all-girl freerock. Ark Tarp wrote: Copenhagen based all-girl improv unit Mette Mareridt seeks new terrortories and digs deeper towards the core of their destinct lo-fi, acid drenched noise-o-rama. Parkliv skizophrenically presents three cdr’s revealing three different personalities of the twisted hydra Mette Mareridt has grown to be. Rhythmic, stoned, and at times blasting drums, penetrating freakout riffs and hypnotic keyboard drones; this shit will have you simultaneously banging your head and crawling around like a space monkey.

Dreamers Cloth . Positive theme music . Stenze quo . 2008 . c30 ltd. ? . download
More sci-fi-soundtracks-as-heard-through-a-wall-music from neo-age pioneer DC. Less dolphins-and-pomegranates joyfulness than usual, the sound is trancier in a hypnotic way, and colder like deep space is cold. Music from the k-hole.

Sexdrome 7"

Sexdrome . 7" . Posh isolation . 20 . 7" ltd. 300 . download
Once again borrowed from funeral stench: You know because you have been waiting for it. For those who don't know this is violent, stomping Raw BM from Denmark.

Vinyl- terror & -horror - Nightmare Lullabies

Vinyl- terror & -horror: Nightmare Lullabies. Self-released. 2004. Download.
Vinyl- terror & -horror is more of an artistic project than a band. They are a duo that create installations, some of these are contraptions that play vinyl (see picture above). These vinyls are manipulated in different ways e.g. pieces of assorted vinyl are glued together for the sake of new sound. The result is unsettling loopscapes, churning like carousels of doom. It cracks and pops and squeals, sometimes jarringly so. A distant, rough and raw cousin to the music of Philip Jeck and others.

Shiggajon / dreamers cloth - live at the cube

Shiggajon / Dreamers cloth . Live 1: at the cube . s/r by shiggajon . 2010 . c50 ltd. 100 . download
First tape in shiggajon's live series. Very droney rock-like sounds from shiggajon and a focused, ambient and catchy set by dreamers cloth.

Concerning Odense

Anyone interested in what's going on in Danish music outside of Copenhagen and Århus should check this blog out:

Documenting the semi-obscure (at least not very well promoted) contemporary underground scene in Odense, this blog could really turn out interesting!

Kirstein og Lunds - yxhugg

Kirstein og Lunds . Yxhugg . s/r . 2009 . c10 ltd. 50 . download
Freakshow by Tobias Kirstein on drums and Johns Lunds on baritone sax.
